Crab Apple helps us to realise that the desire for perfection is a way to avoid confronting our own reality.

The remedy makes it possible to distinguish what is important from what is not.

The fruits of the wild apple tree are sour and bitter: they facilitate digestion and detoxification.

Likewise, Crab Apple flushes the mind from obsessive thoughts.

It is also used externally as a disinfectant.

OAK:  For When We Demand Too Much Of Ourselves

Oak types have enviable qualities and generally possess extraordinary strength and endurance.

When everyone is adrift, the Oak types take matters into their own hands.

They do not spare time or effort, nor do they let themselves down by illness or moments of despair.

The important thing is to achieve the goal.

Others usually admire them, but do not like them: they rarely joke and often do not understand the weaknesses of their neighbours, for whom they can hardly feel feelings of closeness.

Under the hard shell, they feel alone.

Like the oak from which it takes its name, the Oak type does not bend in the wind.

But, like oak, it has a weakness. In the face of a violent lash, other plants bend, adapt and eventually manage to survive, while the oak lacks this ability and, as a result, breaks apart.

The same thing happens to Oak. It is them who always take responsibility, the cornerstone who knows how to face any situation: they cannot give in, nor show signs of giving up.

They must resist at all costs, they cannot show themselves weak, get sick, or rest.

But, in the end, they risk crashing.

WILLOW: For When We Live With Bitterness And Resentment

The Willow types carry a big worry within.

Convinced that they have suffered an enormous and undeserved injustice, they feel themselves the victim of a cruel fate and continually struggle, thinking about what their life could have been like “if it hadn’t happened that…”.

In some cases, Willow manifests their victimhood even in small daily chores: “I’m late because there was a power outage on the subway.”

When in fact, they woke up late.

“I was sacked because the director couldn’t stand me from day one”.

When in fact, they had been chatting on the phone with a friend for half an hour.

Willow has the impression that the whole world works against them and never takes responsibility: they constantly recriminate, mulling over a past that should now belong to the past.

One remains partially or totally paralysed, and one loses speech and, often, even hearing.

Stunned, we acknowledge that the security of our little universe has suddenly been destroyed.

Star of Bethlehem dissolves the emotional block caused by the trauma and helps us to be aware of our emotions again.

Bach defined it as “the remedy that soothes and comforts pain and suffering”.

Let’s try to imagine a butterfly closed in its cocoon: it does not see a way out, yet it is close to being able to go out into the sunlight.

ELM: For When We Feel Overwhelmed With Responsibilities

The Elm type is smart, knows how to take responsibility and often considers work a vocation.

We spin around in circles and, instead of calmly looking for a solution, we keep wondering why we have slipped into a dead end.

Often we don’t even look for a solution because, after all, we think we don’t have the energy to get out of it.

White Chestnut helps us to control our thoughts rather than being dominated by them.

We learn to enter a state of calmness and focus our attention on possible solutions to a given problem.

MUSTARD: For Those Feeling Deeply Sad Without Knowing Why

They always feel inconsolable, and unable to control their moods, with a perennial lump in their throat which, however, never manages to dissolve in a liberating cry.

According to Bach, Mustard, a beautiful flower with an intense yellow colour, “drives away sadness and brings back the joy of living”, putting us back in touch with our soul.

This is an expression that has a very precise meaning among the Hopi Indians of Central America.

When they realise they are too tense or have walked too fast, they stop and do absolutely nothing, even for a whole day, “to wait for the souls to join us”.

Mustard is also useful in cases of light and recurrent depressions, or when we feel that we are living a grey life and are always inexplicably tired.

CHESTNUT BUD: For a Tendency to Repeating the Same Mistakes

Chestnut Bud is the typical remedy for those who do not know how to put their experiences to good use, learning from their mistakes, and therefore are led to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

They change jobs and then find themselves in an office with the same characteristics as the previous one.

They leave their partner because they are too authoritarian and end up falling in love with a tyrant.

Bach writes:

“The Chestnut Bud type leaves the past behind too quickly. They don’t take their mistakes seriously and for this reason they are destined to repeat them ”.

They often live superficially, moving from one situation to another without thinking twice just to escape something that doesn’t suit them.

From defeat to defeat, they then develop the conviction that it’s fate that is raging against them, as if they are haunted by an inexorable doom.

In reality, the Chestnut Bud types run away from themselves: they erase the past to start over each time from scratch.

But sometimes they pay a very bitter price.

Chestnut Bud helps to stop repeating the vicious cycle.

It offers the possibility to learn from experiences and to understand their meaning.

We often justify our impatience by saying that their behaviour is different from ours.

In reality, the irritation arises from the fact that we consider others as a threat to our beliefs and our lifestyle.

In order not to question our principles, we colour the world in right and wrong, and we tend to close in ourselves.

Beech is the remedy for those who find it difficult to tolerate others, whom they often consider ignorant and foolish.

Bach writes:

“The Beech type expects everyone to be equal to them and manifest their impatience with outbursts of anger. They hardly feel compassion and cannot understand the choices and paths other people choose to follow. They are unable to conceive that others are also in search of perfection, even though following methods and ways different from theirs “.

Beech helps to accept oneself with kindness and, therefore, to be tolerant and understanding towards other people.

They learn to recognise other people’s qualities and to avoid getting irritated by their weaknesses.

VINE: The Strong, Ambitious & Determined Leader

Vine types have an individualistic character and think they don’t need the presence of others.

The positive results they manage to achieve are the fruit of their willpower and their skills.

Idolised by everyone when they are at the peak of success, they are then abandoned and left alone in case of defeat.

If positive qualities prevail, the Vine type is a great leader, gifted with unparalleled willpower, initiative and presence of mind in solving problems.

Vine are also very disciplined, ambitious and constantly striving artists to offer the best of themselves.

At its worst, the Vine type is authoritarian, demands blind obedience, is driven by an insatiable and cynical will to power.

The father-master and the tyrannical boss are classic negative examples of this type.

How the Remedy Works

Vine teaches to be respected for one’s natural gifts and not for being unscrupulous in imposing one’s will.

We learn how to use leadership qualities not only for personal affirmation, but also for the needs of the community.

On the other hand, those who fear abusing their power will find the strength to impose themselves, without thereby overpowering others.

VERVAIN: The Idealist Who Gets Devoured By The Cause

The Vervain type is an enthusiast.

Convinced that they are right, they go to great lengths to convince others to support their ideas and embrace the ideals they stand for.

Once they embrace a faith or a cause, they hardly abandon it.

Bach writes:

“If they fall ill, they continue to struggle even when others have already given up for a long time”.

In some cases, their dedication to the cause leads to fanaticism: missionary zeal leads them to want to convince their friends at all costs, who turn away from them so as not to be constantly subjected to their sermons.

The causes to which the Vervain type is dedicated are not always sublime: the mother who forces her daughter to be dressed like her or the father who is stubborn so that the son practices mountaineering, despite being terrified of it, are classic examples of Vervain behaviour.

How the Remedy Works

Vervain teaches us to consider the point of view of others, not to expect the whole world to think the same way, to be able to listen to others, and to present our beliefs with respect.

It helps us to break away from daily chores from time to time to enjoy life, rest body and mind and free ourselves from the obsession of always having to be busy.

ROCK WATER: Those Living Imprisoned By Strict Rules

This is the only Bach’s remedy that does not consist of a flower, but of rock water taken from natural springs known for their healing properties.

In Europe, amongst other waters, that from Lourdes was also used.

Bach writes:

“Those very controlled people needs Rock Water, the ones who tend to reject the joys and pleasures of life because they believe they could interfere with their work. Rock Water is a stern master of himself. They want to be healthy, strong and active and do everything to keep fit ”.

They can be addicted to diets and follow a discipline with a rigour that borders on fanaticism.

In extreme cases, they become part of religious or esoteric sects, estranging themselves from the life of ordinary people.

Unlike the Vine type, Rock Water does not try to persuade others with their beliefs and close themselves in their own world.

“They hope to push others to follow their principles by example,” notes Bach.

Other people’s ideas don’t interest them and they refuse to question them.

Striving to perfect themselves, they set goals that are difficult to achieve and, when they fail to achieve them, they judge themselves with merciless severity.

This mental rigidity affects their body: they often suffer from joint problems and may have affective problems.

How the Remedy Works

Rock Water helps us to be more open-minded and more flexible; it induces us to take ourselves less seriously, to occasionally go out of the way of everyday life and enjoy the pleasant aspects of it.

We come to understand that even if we don’t do everything perfectly, or if we sometimes forget to do what we set out to do, we don’t become a person to be despised.

Those who take Rock Water do not give up on their ideals, nor the effort necessary to achieve them, but they manage to smooth out the most angular aspects of their personality and not to be too hard on themselves.

CHICORY: For Possessive & Suffocating Love

The Chicory type takes care of children, relatives, friends, and does everything because they act according to their principles.

They advise, organise, correct, criticise… they suffocate with their love for them.

But they also get distressed if they don’t get the gratitude they think they deserve or if their help is rejected: they get offended, they complain and recriminate.

They are afraid of not being loved enough and then try to earn love by doing their best for others.

They often surround themselves with people who need them and choose professions that allow them to express their need to help others: teachers, nurses, social workers, missionaries.

Chicory is particularly suitable for parents who find it difficult to detach from their children, even if they are already adults: they tend to keep them dependent and linked, to the point of jeopardising the harmonious development of their personality.

Chicory helps us to freely express love, feelings and emotions without setting conditions or demanding the same from others.

The remedy produces a profound inner transformation: day by day, we realise that we are not loved for what we do, but for who we are.

Sometimes their fears also manifest physically on themselves: they stutter, they blush, they sweat profusely, they have palpitations.

In general, excesses annoy them: too much light, too many people, too much noise.

For this reason, every now and then they need to be alone with themselves to find peace of mind.

On a deeper level, the Mimulus type is a person who suffers from shyness, does not like to talk about their fears – fear that they will not be up to the tasks they have to face, sometimes feeling rejected and attacked by others.

ASPEN: A Vague and Unexplained Fear

Aspen is the remedy for fears in which we cannot explain the reason: a feeling of imminent danger, which becomes even more distressing precisely because its origin is not understood.

Generally, people subject to these anxieties have a sensitivity above the norm, as if they possessed the ability to perceive the anxieties of the whole world: war, violence, disease.

Bach wrote about it:

“Those who try to do something good during their short stay in the world are more subject to this type of anguish”.

Precisely because they are aware of the mysterious and inexplicable restlessness that populate the universe and torment the psyche, Aspen-type people succeed well in the professions of the soul: psychology, psychoanalysis, astrology.

How the Remedy Works

Aspen helps put a limit on our imagination when it arouses unjustified anguish.

In this way it is possible to react to stimuli calmly and thoughtfully.

Often those who treat themselves with Aspen stop feeling the need to resort to amulets and magic formulas to keep their anxieties under control.

Aspen also develops the sensitivity necessary to interpret dreams and be in tune with one’s inner self.

RED CHESTNUT: Concern With Loved Ones

The Red Chestnut type is constantly worried about their loved ones and always imagines that the worst can happen, even in the quietest situations.

By dint of imagining catastrophic scenarios, they communicate their anxiety to others thus undermining their safety and depriving them of the presence of mind necessary to face dangers.

In this way, they risk suffocating, rather than favouring, the initiative of the people they love the most.

Red Chestnut helps to communicate safety and not anxiety to the loved ones around us, allowing them to be independent, able to take care of themselves, able to lead their lives according to their inclinations.

ROCK ROSE: An Unreasonable and Uncontrollable Terror

Fear can be caused by a threat or a drama: the child has had an accident, a loved one has a serious illness, a hurricane hits the house we live in.

In these situations, panicking is the most natural, but least effective reaction.

We must continue to take care of the little one, take care of the sick person, restore the order of the house so that it becomes liveable again…

If we can’t keep calm, we must at least take action.

Rock Rose is the remedy for situations where you feel so scared and desperate that you lose hope of finding a way out to solve the problem.

Edward Bach wrote:

“Cherry Plum is the remedy for when our mind is overworked, we fear losing our minds and performing terrible and frightening actions”.

Let’s remember to take Cherry Plum when we are about to explode: tell our best friend that we have always hated him, have uncontrollable outbursts of anger, be caught in murderous or even suicidal fantasies…

These are thoughts that arise after a long period of stress or during changes that have upset our life.

Often in order to try to control these impulses, we withdraw into ourselves, develop obsessive and meticulous manias or rituals.

Cherry Plum is also useful when starting psychotherapy, to make it easy to turn your gaze towards your inner self.

Cherry Plum teaches that any negative experience that may appear conveys a message that helps to face difficulties with greater courage.

They often feel discontented and unhappy without knowing why. But the reason is simple.

The root of their unhappiness lies within: they cannot love themselves.

If we consider ourselves full of defects and we think we don’t deserve the love of our neighbour, we inevitably tend to believe that others are not worthy of attention.

One becomes extremely suspicious and sees enemies everywhere: the boss prefers colleagues, the partner lies, fortune always happen to others.

The Holly types manifest their discomfort with feelings of envy and jealousy.

In extreme cases, if they can’t get what they want, they express themselves with hatred and revenge.

All of us, to some extent, need the healing energy that is released from the Holly remedy.

As Bach writes:

“Holly opens our hearts and protects us from any feeling other than that of universal love”.

Walnut is indicated for every moment of transition: birth, teething, puberty, marriage, pregnancy, menopause, retirement.

It helps to break ties with the past, to continue with confidence and without too much suffering, relieving the emotional and physical stress that any change entails.

The Centaury type is kind, easy-going, and is easily manipulated by those stronger than them.

They have what is called the “mat syndrome”, typical of those who cannot deny favours.

And the very people around them are the last to notice their pain.

Full of interest, they like to go to parties and surround themselves with people so as not to be overwhelmed by thoughts, but they rarely talk to others about their problems and express their feelings about them.

They avoid arguments and hate direct confrontation, to the point that they often fail to recognise and express what they feel.

The Agrimony type is never a superficial person, they simply fear to upset or annoy others with their sadness.

Sometimes they can also resort to the use of alcohol or drugs to be able to keep their mask of apparent happiness intact.

Agrimony helps to realise that facing problems and difficulties is easier than ignoring them.

The remedy “thaws” the personality of the Water Violet type, leading them to establish a relationship with the world and making them more open and available.

In this way they learn that others also have something to give them: they become inclined to find the good points and broaden their perspectives.

IMPATIENS: Intolerance Towards Others

For this reason, few people have the courage to recognise themselves in the characteristics described here, making Heather’s prescription not easy to accept.

One may also need Heather to correct a passing situation when, in moments of crisis or particular difficulty, one may feel the need to talk about themselves to others.

SCLERANTHUS: The Eternal Indecisive

The Scleranthus type finds it difficult to make a choice, even if faced with only two alternatives.

When they come to a decision, it’s never a final one.

They are always torn apart because they are attracted to the opposites: undecided between a job that requires contact with people and an activity to be done at home alone; between a family partner and one with countless social commitments; between living in the countryside or in the city.

They go from one extreme to the other, their speeches are as contradictory as their thoughts, they often change ideas, opinions, clothes and companies.

This difficulty in making choices derives from the fact that they have lost the ability to listen to themselves, to be in contact with the deepest part of them: they don’t know what to dream, what to hope for and, consequently, what to choose.

They fluctuate, but refuse to seek advice from others, with the result that their inner instability is reflected in their bodies: they often suffer from nausea, headache, constipation or diarrhoea, and alternate periods of lack of appetite with large binges.

Scleranthus helps to regain contact with oneself, to build a scale of values that serves to orient oneself in choices and to be, at the same time, flexible and balanced in making decisions.

CERATO: If We Don’t Trust Our Own Judgement

The Cerato type is perpetually indecisive.

They continue to go from one person to another in search of advice and reassurance, and prefer to rely on the judgement of their friends rather than listening to their own intuition.

They end up getting irritated by having been influenced by others, who would have pushed them to make the wrong decision.

Precisely for this reason, they are often dissatisfied.

The Wild Oat person wants to try all the possibilities that life offers them, but hardly brings anything to fruition.

Constant commitment makes them feel trapped, locked in a prison.

After all, a long-term choice would lead them to verify if they are really capable of achieving something.

Wild Oat helps us to connect with ourselves, our deepest desires, and understand what we really want in life.

The remedy teaches us to dig deep, with consistency and determination, to focus on a purpose rather than getting lost in a thousand initiatives.

Even those who cannot decide which Bach flower is suitable for their problems can take Wild Oat for a couple of weeks: it will then be easier for them to find the most suitable remedy.

HORNBEAM: Those Who Drag Along, Without Energy

Bach called Hornbeam “the remedy for Monday sickness”.

Those who don’t have the psychological energy to face another week equal to the previous ones: the same routine, the same food at the company canteen, the same papers to fill out, always identical for years.

Fatigue invades all spaces of life and manages to infect even those that should be the most pleasant moments, dedicated to love, fun, sport, culture, pastimes.

They always feel apathetic, arid, imprisoned by the weight of everyday life.

The strong sense of demotivation and profound exhaustion causes these people a slight depression, empties their life of meaning and produces an inner malaise that leaves them more exhausted than any physical effort.

Headache, insomnia, lack of concentration, the need to resort to stimulants to carry out the most trivial daily tasks are the most common physical manifestations related to this discomfort.

Hornbeam helps us to get out of apathy by recovering mental clarity to face everyday tasks with greater energy.

It also promotes sleep, thus allowing the mind to regenerate.

Having recovered the necessary vitality, we’re able to face the situation with awareness, in order to find ways to get out of the daily routine, to know how to decide and add a pinch of creativity and imagination to our life.

GENTIAN: If We See Everything Black

Fundamentally pessimistic, perpetually dissatisfied, the Gentian type is often prey to feelings of distrust and scepticism.

They only believe in facts, statistics, logic and show little enthusiasm for spiritual values.

They have doubts about the effectiveness of psychoanalysis, about the usefulness of psychology and, consequently, fail to take advantage of it.

If they practise a religion, they do it out of tradition or because they grew up there, but without inner adherence.

Constantly looking for answers, they can’t find them because they limit their observations to the material world, constantly being disappointed by them.

Faced with difficulties, they are easily discouraged.

Every obstacle causes them discouragement and anguish and leads them to question already established initiatives.

They interpret any minor setback negatively, as if it happened “on purpose” to thwart and mess up their plans.

How the Remedy Works

Gentian leads us to seeing difficulties as an inevitable part of life.

The remedy teaches us to face them with greater detachment, without feeling haunted by bad luck, avoiding that they have a “cascade” effect on every aspect of our existence.

It also strengthens the determination to fight, to overcome obstacles, to face problems without getting caught up in anguish.

Gentian also helps to overcome temporary depressions caused by sudden and painful events: the death of a loved one, the end of a love affair, a long illness or a school failure.

GORSE: When All Hope is Lost

At first glance, the Gorse type can appear to be a victim trapped in the grip of a situation without remedy, despite all efforts to get out of it.

In fact, their attitude often satisfies a deep need for love and attention.

For example, if they are sick, they feel gratified for the kindness that their relatives and friends give them, but they don’t believe that their advice is of any use.

Bach explains:

“To please others they are able to undergo the most diverse therapies, whilst being convinced that there is no possibility of improvement.” It is easy for them, with the excuse of difficult health conditions, to find support and understanding for their lack of initiative: “How can you criticise him? With everything that he’s facing!”.

Gorse is also the right remedy for those who, for fear of failure, avoid taking initiatives and trying new paths, basking in their immobility.

Often, they don’t want to listen and refuse to face the truth.

How the Remedy Works

Gorse can rekindle the spark of hope.

It helps us to look at the situation with new eyes, to discover a way out of difficulties.

The remedy restores optimism and the will to live, and leads to a radical change in the mood.

Bach writes:

“There is no healing without a profound transformation of one’s mental attitude”.

Treating the patient, not the disease

“You don’t have to consider the disease. Just think about what the sick person’s attitude towards life is“: so wrote Edward Bach in his book Healing with Flowers.

In fact, it’s often the attitude of the mind that changes the balance of the organism: hence the disease appears.

Bach realised that people with the same disease responded differently to the same type of treatment and that each individual has a personal and unique response.

Not only: people with certain character peculiarities react in the same way to therapy, whilst others, with different natures, need different treatments, even if they have the same disorder.

Bach began to carefully observe his patients, becoming more and more convinced that, in defining a cure, it’s essential to take into account their personality.

He thus came to divide the various underlying attitudes of his patients into 7 groups, starting to prescribe medicines based on the person’s belonging to one of these groups and to observe the reactions.

The first results further convinced him that his intuitions were correct.

Later, when he discovered the healing powers of flowers, he decided to classify the plants according to their ability to correct the underlying attitudes he had described.

And it is precisely in this order that we present the 38 Bach flower remedies.

The life force of the plant is concentrated in the flower

The choice of flowers as a remedy for the treatment of diseases did not happen by chance.

In his own medical practice, Bach had long wanted to use herbs, in which he had always had a deep interest.

One day, in September 1928, during a walk in Wales he picked two flowers, Impatiens and Mimulus.

He thought that the flowers, the part of the plant richest in vital principles, could be useful in the therapies with his patients.

He abandoned everything, to retire to the countryside with the aim of devoting himself to the study of the therapeutic properties of the flowers.

He decided to deal only with non-poisonous wild plants, carefully examining both their characteristics and the environment in which they grow.

He then tried to establish a resemblance between the qualities of the flower and those of the people to whom he intended the care.

For example, the flower Impatiens: as soon as it is touched it launches its seeds like small bullets.

For this, Bach chose it as a remedy for people ready to react to the slightest provocation of the environment.

Transforming Negative Energies

Bach flowers have been called “medicines that vibrate”.

Scientists have shown, in fact, that even the most compact matter is made up of vibrations.

According to some scholars, Bach flowers are effective because they modify the energy state (vibrations) of the sick person: they transform the negative experiences that cause the disease into positive emotions, which restore well-being.

Flower remedies have proved extremely effective in overcoming all those ailments for which classical medicine uses psychotropic drugs for: depression, obsession, unmotivated fears, anxieties…

Flower remedies are not only recommended for all diseases, but also in case of psychological trauma.

Seeing a Therapist

Flower care, also called flower therapy, is practised by doctors, herbalists, naturopaths or other therapists who have followed specialised courses.

The therapist usually asks the patient many questions about their type of attitude towards life and their physical situation.

How they are taken

Unless otherwise indicated, 4 drops are taken 4 times a day, usually at regular intervals between meals.

The first administration should be done as soon as you wake up and the last one before going to bed.

The drops are placed under the tongue and held for a few seconds.

They can also be diluted in a liquid: water, tea, juice or herbal tea.

What if we choose the wrong flower?

There are no contraindications to the use of Bach flowers, even if the treatment lasts for long periods.

But what if you take the wrong remedy?

If we take a “wrong” flower, there are no consequences.

It would be as if a musician were trying to get in tune with another instrument and not succeeding: the instruments certainly don’t get damaged, the right music is simply not produced.

The wrong remedy will not produce beneficial effects: it cannot make the person feel in harmony with self, but it does not cause any harm either.

Another remedy will have to be found.
